The Silk Road, or Silk Route, refers to a trade route through regions of the Asian continent connecting East and West Asia. Geographically, it is an interconnected series of ancient trade routes starting from Chang'an (today's Xi'an) and leading to Europe and the Near East.
The whole Silk Road runs for 7,000 kilometers. The main route of the Silk Road traveled through China along the Gan-Su corridor, then through the Tarima basin, and the highlands of the Pamir and Tian-Shan ranges, into Central Asia, Afghanistan, Iran, the Eastern shores of the Mediterranean Sea, and still further along to the trading centers of the Near East, Countries of the Silk Road, and Europe. The section in China is over 4,000 kilometers long, more than half of the total length.
The Marine Silk Road refers to the route on the sea connecting China and other countries all over the world. Large quantities of China's silk was transported to Middle and West Asia, Africa and Europe not only by land, but also by marine transportations to other countries in the world.
